Replace Mudbugs

The quality of a Balinese pergola installation becomes clearer as the years go by. If you can see stars through your roof, or notice gaps around the hips, it is time to have the thatch assessed.

We have repaired countless Bali huts, renewing damaged areas and improving the roof details to help you get more life from your thatch. Our team can carry out mudbug (hip covering) repairs, including on steep, 45-degree Balinese roofs.

Yes, we can fix it!

Are you the owner of a leaking gazebo? We can help.

We repair Bali gazebos and thatched roofs in a variety of shapes and sizes. Our experience with existing huts helps us identify problem areas and discuss how they can be repaired.

Storm damage, fallen trees and ageing thatch can affect both the covering and the structure underneath. We assess what needs attention and whether a local repair or a more extensive restoration is appropriate.

You may have a section of roof that is still in good condition, perhaps because it was re-thatched separately a few years earlier. New thatch gradually darkens as it ages, helping repaired areas blend with the older roof over time.

Brushwood Roofing and Structures

Can brushwood roofing be repaired?

Durability and material availability can make repairing old brushwood roofing impractical. Our approach is to discuss upgrading a suitable structure to Bali (Alang Alang) thatch.

What options are there?

Balinese thatching is a versatile alternative for existing brushwood structures. Depending on the frame, an upgrade may be achieved with relatively minor reconstruction rather than a complete rebuild.

Why Bali thatch?

Natural Alang Alang creates a sheltered, shaded space with a layered finish that looks attractive from inside and outside the hut. We can discuss roof life, debris and ongoing maintenance when comparing it with your existing brushwood covering.

Our thatching method

  1. Remove the old, damaged brushwood, underlay and plywood.
  2. Assess the frame and re-pitch it where needed; our original conversion method uses a minimum 30-degree pitch.
  3. Assess and install additional rafters where required.
  4. Provide and install the kicker bar and ridge extension as specified for the roof.
  5. Install the new thatch and finish the Balinese pergola.
  6. Remove the old and unwanted materials from the site.

The final scope depends on the existing structure. Contact us to discuss the options and arrange a site inspection for a free quote.

All old/damaged thatch will be removed from site.

We provide an after sale service. Should you have any concerns about your gazebo, whether it be maintenance, damage repair or re thatching, please contact us.

Rebuild Your Imported Balinese Gazebo

We bring specialist expertise to strengthening and rebuilding tired imported Balinese structures. An assessment helps establish whether the existing hut can be restored or whether parts of the frame need replacing.

Panel joints and other weak points in an imported roof can allow water through and damage the timber beneath. Our thatching method addresses vulnerable details alongside the condition of the supporting frame.

Some imported huts can be re-thatched before extensive water damage has occurred. Others may need reinforcement or rebuilding. Call us to arrange a visit and discuss the most suitable solution for your Bali hut.
